Position Overview:
The Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) provides essential support in the delivery of occupational therapy services to students in a school setting. Under the supervision of an Occupational Therapist, the COTA will assist with the development and implementation of individualized therapy plans aimed at improving students’ functional skills and ensuring their success in the school environment. This role is crucial for promoting the physical, sensory, and cognitive skills necessary for students to engage in learning and participate in daily school activities.
Key Responsibilities:Assist with Evaluations and Assessments: Support the Occupational Therapist in conducting assessments to identify students’ needs, strengths, and challenges. Help gather information and data to assist in the development of Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).
Implement Therapy Plans: Carry out therapy interventions based on the goals outlined in students' IEPs. This includes promoting fine motor skills, sensory processing, self-regulation, handwriting, and activities of daily living (ADLs) in a school context.
Provide Direct Support to Students: Work directly with students individually or in small groups to help them develop necessary skills for school participation, including classroom tasks, socialization, mobility, and self-care.
Qualifications:
Education:
Associate’s Degree in Occupational Therapy from an accredited program.
Licensure/Certification:
Current certification from the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT).
State licensure or certification to practice as a COTA in [Insert State].
Experience:
Previous experience working with children or in a school-based setting is preferred.
Knowledge and experience in providing therapy for students with a variety of disabilities, including physical, cognitive, sensory, and emotional needs.
Knowledge of school policies, special education law, and IEP processes.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with students, staff, and parents.
